Visual Elements & Principals I

Lecture Exercise
What? Use basic elements to create abstract representative images of words given by tutor

Secret / Prominent

We were given the words "Secret" and "Prominent". For secret, I started associating it with a sealed mouth and whispering in the ears. I doodled a couple of illustrations based on it and (1a) which shows a mouth being zipped up, is one of them. Other illustrations include a finger over the mouth which my partner and I agreed that it gives the wrong notion of silence (in the library). After further brainstorming, we came up with the lock idea for secret as well since my friend associated it with "a diary with a lock". We combined both ideas together and eventually came up with (1b) of a mouth in place of the keyhole on the lock.

The second word, prominent, was simpler. We drew a small white ball against a large colored ball. However, our tutor remarked that if our entire drawing is covered with small white balls, the large colored ball will stand out better than before. We took up his suggestion and redrew to (2).
